Against the concrete jungle: The politics of urban development

Socialism 2019

Under the capitalist system, everything is produced with profit in mind. This is no different with the city, which since the dawn of capitalism has been developed with the needs of the capitalist economy taking central place. This can be seen across the world, such as the stratification of the working class and the placement of lower income groups into areas most affected by pollution. But a new world can be created if the working class uses their industrial power to control the means of production, so that cities can be developed and changed for human needs, not profit. One example of this can be seen with the enforcement of the greens ban by the Builders Labourers Federation through their struggle to fight against attacks by the capitalist class.
