The British vote to exit the European Union has opened up crises on many fronts. Within hours of the result, Conservative PM David Cameron had resigned, and the Conservative Party began to fight out a new leadership contest. Right-wing Labour MPs used the result as an excuse to try to get rid of left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn, creating mass mobilisation by Labour supporters in his defence. The impact of the Brexit vote was very damaging for the European Union as a political project. Far right parties across Europe are trying to claim credit and build their racist projects. Time will tell what forces will ultimately be able to take advantage of this turmoil. The left will need to resist racism and engage in struggles against austerity from below in any case.
