Many people rightfully feel that wealthy countries like Australia should help those who are less fortunate. Yet much research has shown that foreign aid overwhelmingly fails to assist those who need it, and instead is aimed at maximising the dominance and influence of the donor nation. Meanwhile the political right often attack aid budgets with a chauvinist rationale. What do socialists say about this complex issue? Are there alternative forms of international solidarity that do not strengthen imperialism?
