The "bogan" is a caricature of the working class that is increasingly prevalent. The derogatory portrayal of workers as racist, sexist, vulgar and violent is an aspect of the oppression of the working class and the middle class elitism that prevails in popular culture and the mainstream media. The demonisation of Duncan Storrar by the QandA panel and the Murdoch media was a clear example of this phenomena. This session will explore the reasons for this contempt towards the working class and will offer a defence of "disrespectful" behaviour in response to oppression and exploitation.
