Parliament in Australia just looks like a ruling class debate club – all the while both major parties are in furious agreement on all the key issues affecting ordinary people. Tax cuts and subsidies for the rich, cuts to social services, racist treatment of First Nations communities and refugees, and massive military spending to name a few of the shared policy priorities across the aisle. But does it always have to be this way? After all, everyone has an equal vote – an equal chance to kick out a hated government or elect a radical opposition party. Whatever problems you may have with the system, at least you get a chance to change it with your vote… right? This session will investigate the Marxist approach to parliamentary democracy and the prospects for a revolutionary alternative.
