Life in Queensland under Joh 'the Hillbilly Dictator' Bjelke-Petersen's premiership was tightly controlled. Dissent, criticism or difference of any kind was banned because it would disrupt his government's addiction to unfettered development, bribery and graft. Senior police were closely tied to the government with Bjelke-Petersen using the police as his own private army albeit one which oversaw a huge and lucrative protection racket. But there was resistance - inspirational struggles which show us that we need to fight to achieve anything.
